The Grosvenor family own most of Mayfair, so it is strange that they slummed in on Millbank until 1807, when Robert Grosvenor, the 1st Marquess of Westminster, acquired the lease of what was then Gloucester House for £20,000. A lick of gilt, some crimson damask, scarlet carpets, fancy chandeliers and a bit of stucco later, and the house was good to go. (Lord Lonsdale said at the time that it was 'most expensively furnished but in bad taste'.) Later the 2nd Earl of Grosvenor added a couple of picture galleries, as you do, to house his collection, which included works by Gainsborough and Velázquez. In 1889 electricity was introduced - very hi-tech for the time. The Government occupied the house in 1916 and the 2nd Duke of Westminster did not return after the war. It was demolished in 1927 and replaced by the Grosvenor House Hotel, the first hotel in London to have a separate bathroom for every bedroom.

His wife, Millicent, whose descent down the gorgeous stairway figured in so many Edwardian memoirs, was half-sister to Daisy, Countess of Warwick, and associated with both the Marlborough House Set and the Souls–a unique event, for the aims of the two social circles rarely, if ever, met. The home was initially built in the 1820s for the Duke of York and Albany, and was known then as York House. After the duke’s death in 1827, the home was but a shell, but it was quickly purchased by and completed for the 2nd Marquess of Stafford, and it was known as Stafford House from then on.

Dorchester House was one of Mayfair’s most breathtaking of mansions. Built for R.S. Holford in 1851-53 on the site of an older house of the same name belonging to the extinct earldom of Dorchester, Augustus Hare described it as “an imitation, not a caricature of the best Italian models.” The house was shaped like a parallelogram: the mansion stood before a triangular forecourt, a massive stone wall enclosed the grounds, and passage was gained through the lodge stationed at the entrance where Deanery Street ran into Park Lane. The most impressive part of this house was the grand staircase. It dominated the center of the house “in a great balconied hall that rose three full stories.”

Burlington House

In between his two Grand Tours of Italy (1714 and 1719) young Lord Burlington's taste was transformed by the publication of Giacomo Leoni's Palladio. In 1717 or 1718, Colen Campbell was appointed to replace Gibbs, who was working in the Baroque style of Sir Christopher Wren, to recast the work in a new manner, on the old foundations. This was a key moment in the history of English architecture, as Campbell's work was in a strict Palladian style, and the aesthetic preferences of Campbell and Burlington soon joined by their close associate William Kent, who worked on interiors at Burlington House, were to provide the leading strain in English architecture and interior decoration for two generations.
Blatant Lies, Open Secrets

Among the Revolutionary War heroes of July 4th, none appears straighter to us now than George Washington. However, his straightness (like so much of compulsory heterosexuality) forms only an illusion. What you learned in grade school that George Washington chopped down a cherry tree and then confessed, "Father, I cannot tell a lie" is a lie. And what your teacher didn't tell you that "Washington was a homosexual" is true.

Evidence of Washington's love of men has been published before. Noel I. Garde in 1964 included George Washington in Jonathan to Gide, The Homosexual in History. The author's vision came out of the 60s sexual liberation which led to Stonewall. As a source, Jonathan to Gide cites J.V. Nash, Homosexuality in the Lives of the Great, Little Blue Book No. 1564, which was published in Girard, Kansas, during the 1930s by radical populists. Their publication of Homosexuality in the Lives of the Great like the original Wizard of Oz (published during the Depression of 1893) attacked the sacred standards of the time. In Kansas somewhere over the rainbow they were fighting against the heterosexual standard as well as the gold standard.

Today the United States Army is so militantly anti-gay that many cannot imagine that the man "first in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen" loved other men. But military men before Washington actively pursued men, and in. the armies of the 18th century, there were literally armies of lovers. In 1759 Washington recognized his own gay heritage by ordering busts of six famous generals: Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar (who was hailed in the streets of Rome: "Regina! Regina!"), Charles XII of Sweden, Frederick the Great of Prussia, Prince Eugene of Savoy, and the Duke of Marlborough (Winston Churchill's ancestor). Major General Frank M. Richardson includes all these generals in his study Mars Without Venus, A Study of Some Homosexual Generals (1981). Known as "Mme l'Ancienne," Prince Eugene, for instance, "belonged to a small effeminate set that included such unabashed perverts as the young Abb de Choisy, who was invariably dressed as a girl, except when he wore the lavish earrings and make-up of a mature woman."

Recent televised versions of Washington's life have transformed him into a lady's man. While he loved the company of women, he never favored them sexually. His father died early and his mother kept him in hand as a young boy and prevented his going away to England, or even to William and Mary, for schooling. She prohibited his joining the navy. Washington's tastes in women ran to mothers and married women. Much has been made of his attachment to Mrs. Sally Fairfax, who taught him about plays, art, current music, and gossip. Like many gay men, he turned to womanly culture, but that made him neither a woman nor a sexual partner of women. Martha Custis provided him a perfect consort/cover. A very wealthy widow with two children, she was 26 when she married George, and the couple never had any children.

Sensitive and drawn to women's wit, Washington was also drawn to military men. He loved uniforms and was particularly keen on his own appearance. He totally adored his older brother Lawrence, Virginia's Adjutant General, who died in his arms. George then turned to older men, such as his brother's patron, Lord Fairfax, or General Braddock, for guidance and affection. He loved sleeping in the field with the men on long marches during the 18th century colonial wars. Washington himself was quite a hunk. "I have sometimes thought him," a nephew wrote of his uncle, "decidedly the handsomest man I ever saw; and when in a lively mood, so fully of pleasantry, so agreeable to all with whom he was associated, that I could hardly realize that he was the same Washington whose dignity awed all who approached him." The general loved to dance.

During the American Revolution, Washington gathered a very gay group of staff officers. The General's relations with a handsome West Indian youth (Alexander Hamilton) have led some historians to speculate that the boy was Washington's illegitimate son. The two men had passionate lovers' quarrels. After one of these battles, Hamilton confided to another friend that after the war he could "say many things" about the old man's character. Letters from Alexander Hamilton to John Laurens (when he was away on a mission) contain more than common rhetorical phrases such as "your obedient servant." "Cold in my professions, warm in friendships, I wish my Dear Laurens," Hamilton writes in April, 1779, "it might be in my power, by action rather than words, to convince you that I love you." And in September, he wrote, "like a jealous lover, when I thought you slighted my caresses, my affection was alarmed and my vanity piqued." (Jonathan Katz, Gay American History, p. 453). Hamilton writes about his "size," intercourse, and jeu de follie, a playful sexual term. Hamilton read all these letters to his commander.

The Homintern (international homosexual conspiracy) was very lively in the 18th century. For his quartermaster, Washington chose Frederick William Von Steuben, who communicated with the commander through French-speaking Hamilton and Laurens. Steuben himself had served Frederick the Great and his brother Prince Henry in Prussia; both generals were quite openly lovers of men. Steuben claimed the closest intimacies with both; his stories of being a baron and being so close to the royal family, like so many queen stories, have a kernel of truth and a bushel of elaboration. But Steuben's companion who wrote his first biography in 1859 describes the general who brought Steuben out as a person "of debauchery and profligacy." And there were stories that Steuben had to flee Germany because of his being "accused of having taken familiarities with young boys."

Steuben taught the American boys discipline (he spoke only German and French at the time) and took two boys from the United States Army for his lifelong lovers. Later to mark their love for each other William North and Frederick Steuben carved their initials together on a tree at their rural retreat. The general called his American boys sans culottes (without breeches, the tight pants Washington always wore), a term later applied to the French Revolutionaries. Doubtless he studied closely the soldiers' asses and crotches; the more modest trousers have been with us ever since. Steuben never married and never had any children. At the time of his death in 1794 he was living with a young Columbia university graduate John W. Mulligan, to whom the old general whispered his dying words, "Don't be alarmed, my son." In his own old age Mulligan became US Consul at Athens.

All of the gay boys in Washington's headquarters loved him and vied for his affections. In his dealings with the boys the commander kept teasing them, leading them on and playing them off against each other. His closest ties were with a young Frenchman, Lafayette, whom (in Gershwin-style) he called "the man I love." A teenager when he left France, Lafayette's hazel eyes, red hair, and puppy-dog obedience won Washington over; after the battle of Monmouth in 1778 the two spent the night, snuggled together under the general's great coat. In a letter to his commander, the youth asked for a locket from Washington and called himself his "sweetheart." After Lafayette had been away on furlough, Washington promised to embrace him "with all the warmth of an affectionate friend when you come to headquarters, where a bed is prepared for you." The boy trapped the British at Yorktown in 1781 and Washington arrived in time to receive the surrender. When the two met on the battlefield, Lafayette kissed Washington from ear to ear several times "with as much ardor as ever an absent lover kissed his mistress on his return." The band played "The World Turned Upside Down."

Washington's boys continued to follow him after the war. Lafayette took the Bastille (July 14, 1789) and sent Washington the key to that prison. Von Steuben tried to get the very gay Prince Henry of Prussia to become king of the United States. And Hamilton and others tried to make Washington himself king. In his new cabinet, Alexander Hamilton became Secretary of the Treasury and Washington's closest advisor.

Washington's love of boys and men means more to the United States than a little gossip. Had he had lots of children (like the Kennedys) he might well have been tempted to become king for his descendants' sake. But he never faced that temptation. And his lack of offspring made it easier for him to free his slaves (after his and Martha's deaths). The notion that "Washington slept here" now takes on new meaning.

My first introduction to C.A. Tripp's work came through his quite comprehensive Homosexual Matrix ("a multi-disciplinary perspective that owes much to the work of Alfred C. Kinsey"). It came out in 1975, and Boston's Gay Male Liberation Study Group immediately acquired all ten copies stocked in the Harvard Cooperative Bookstore. Three years before, we'd also connected with Harry Hay, after he had moved to the Arizona desert and developed a gay liberation outpost there. Later when Harry returned to Los Angeles, he introduced me to Jim Kepner and Don Slater, who served us bourbon straight on the rocks in recycled mayonnaise jars. At the One Institute in LA, Dorr Legg entertained several of my lectures, including one that examined Abraham Lincoln's homosexuality. This later appeared in the Gay Community News and then inDrum Beats: Walt Whitman's Civil War Boy Lovers (Gay Sunshine Press, 1989).

In 1990, the Lesbian and Gay Historians included a panel on gay presidents, chaired by Professor William A. Percy, at the American Historical Association conference. My own contribution was titled "George Washington, Abraham Lincoln & Appalachian Sexuality." That was perhaps my first meeting with Tripp, who was as engaging in person as in his writings. Subsequently we spent many hours on the telephone talking about Lincoln.

Now we have before us Tripp's Abraham Lincoln from the Inside, a wonderful book, saved by his survivors from the destruction/oblivion that befell the ancient Alexandrian Library. Among several other researchers, writers, heirs and friends, Lewis Gannett has labored to bring this comprehensive work into print. We must all be grateful for the results, although some "professional" Lincoln scholars may grit their teeth at the results. In a recent review of several current Lincoln books, James M. McPherson, a dean of Civil War scholars and professor at Princeton University, writes in his review, "Of the making of many books about Abraham Lincoln there is no end. But the rest of this updated proverb from Ecclesiastes may be inapplicable. Much study of these books is not necessarily a weariness of the flesh" (The Nation, June 14, 2004). Tripp documents with notable clarity some remarkable aspects of Lincoln's flesh.

No one ever understands another person completely; only parts can be understood. Some figures, however, are particularly enigmatic and complex. Certainly, Lincoln has never been completely transparent never at any time during his life nor subsequently. Two among many attempts to address this issue are Richard N. Current, The Lincoln Nobody Knows (1958) or Stephen B. Oates, Abraham Lincoln, The Man Behind the Myths (1984). They say little about his sexuality and nothing about his homosexuality, but they make clear that there's more to Lincoln than meets the eye. Now C.A. Tripp's work carefully documents what Carl Sandburg had earlier alluded to as Lincoln's "Lavender Streak," something that early gay activist Jim Kepner picked up on immediately.

Appalachian Abe

Tripp has a special license to understand Lincoln through Alfred Kinsey. Kinsey (working in Muncie, Indiana) seems to have been surprised at what he found in the Midwest. His landmark Sexual Behavior in the Human Male (1948) and Sexual Behavior in the Human Female (1953) documented behaviors such as fellatio or cunnilingus that had once been considered Greek, Roman or Parisian deviations were in fact widespread, alive and well, florid and thriving even in Indiana.

The geography/topography of the Lincoln/Kinsey landscape took its present shape from several glaciers that essentially flattened northern Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. Near Middletown, Ohio, a highway sign marks where the last glacier stopped. North of that line the New England/New York influences have prevailed, while south of the line, the hillbillies have had their fun. William B. Hesseltine (Civil War expert, who examined me at the University of Wisconsin) called it the Appalachian "Lap-over." Hesseltine may have had an inkling that Sandburg's "Lavender Streak" was on mark, since he called the Hoosier poet a "guitar-strumming son-of-a-bitch."

Lincoln's birthplace, childhood home, and early career certainly bear an indelible Appalachian mark. Born in a Kentucky log cabin, he soon moved with his family to southern Indiana, and later to the White House, where another Southerner shot and killed him. His gifts and place in history may be unique, but Lincoln shared what Carl Sandburg identified as his "Lavender Streak" with Walt Whitman, the Log Cabin Club, Vice President Dick Cheney's daughter, and many others.

Most writing about homosexuality has centered on the great cities such as Athens, Rome, London, Paris, Berlin, New York or San Francisco. The hinterlands, however, may be much richer in the life of the "flesh," than people think. My own experience began in the Southern Ohio lap-over in Afton, Ohio. At three I ran away from home to join an older man who lived down Percy's Lane near a railroad track; later I played in a corn shock with my Uncle Roy James who gave me love and Vienna sausages. At 12, I caroused in the corncrib and fields with Virgil Jesse and Bobby Bond. The taste of semen in my prepubescent mouth was very interesting. Later my family moved to Hamilton, Ohio, on the Little Miami River. We lived outside the city in a rural slum called "Gobbler's Knob," a hillbilly enclave. There I practiced jerking-off in a pasture field with a neighboring boy; he wanted me to fuck a nearby cow, but I found him more enticing. Later a next-door neighbor piano player and holyroller evangelist fucked me and soon Earl Ivy became a regular lover, after first fucking me in a pigpen. The piano player was later born-again while Earl went off to prison and I went to Harvard.

At Muncie, Indiana, Alfred Kinsey seems to have been surprised at the country sexuality, which he had at first thought occurred only in Chicago and other large cities. Tripp quotes Kinsey's observation: that the "highest frequencies of the homosexual which we have ever secured anywhere have been in particular rural communities in some of the more remote sections of the country." En route to New Harmony, Indiana, fellowFag Ragger Mike Riegle and I received a happy welcome in Terra Haute for the Fag Rag and our gay erotic poetry. Of course, Lincoln also knew more than the backcountry, but the local saying has been that "you can take the boy out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the boy."

Abe like Huck

A friend in New Salem, Indiana, Denton Offutt was attracted to the youngster Abe Lincoln, and invited him to share a raft to New Orleans in 1831. The two carried crops south, sold them and the raft; then they walked back to Illinois, camping out on the way. Lincoln himself later recalled that during this "boat enterprise," Offutt first "conceived a liking" for him. Lincoln also expressed shock at the sight of the slave auctions in New Orleans, but left little account of the relatively open sexuality there. Another traveler to New Orleans had been Walt Whitman in 1848. The poet may have picked up the Spanish word camerada which he heard or himself masculinized as camarado) the military term among Spanish soldiers for a bedmate. On his Springfield office desk, Lincoln himself kept a copy of the second edition of Leaves of Grass (1856), which he sometimes read to his sidekick Billy Herndon or other guests. That edition contains Whitman's first use of the word camerado (spell-check suggests changing it to "camera do"!). The poet probably picked up on the word in the streets of New Orleans, which have long been filled with sailors and back-country boys like Lincoln.

Francis Grierson (1848-1927) witnessed the Lincoln/Douglas debates (1858 in Illinois), which he later described in his Valley of the Shadows (1909). Francis served another Republican presidential candidate, John Fremont, in Missouri, where he served as the General/Governor's secretary when he was only a teenager. Later the Grierson family moved to Niagara Falls, where the youth learned to play the piano and soon began a successful tour along the Atlantic Coat, where he met Walt Whitman. The two became life-long friends. On tour in Paris he visited Paul Verlaine and thought that two lines of the French poet were worth more than the whole of Milton's Paradise Lost.

During the 1860's when both Whitman and Lincoln were in Washington, DC, they had at least a nodding acquaintance. Both spent time at night in the Smithsonian Institute grounds, which then and for many years after provided opportunities for men to rendezvous at their own risk. Lafayette Park (just across the street from the White House) also had had a long reputation as a meeting place for male homosexuals. During the 1950s the urinals became more risky after the DC police installed a one-way mirror, behind which they crouched to witness various "crimes against chastity."

One additional note on Speed: Lincoln did appoint Joshua's brother to his cabinet. After the 1860 election, Joshua and Lincoln had met in a Chicago hotel room with the president-elect en route to Washington sprawled out on the bed. Lincoln offered Joshua any office he might want in the new administration. While Joshua turned down this generous offer, Speed's brother did receive a cabinet appointment, and Whitman received a clerkship in the Justice Department. When the Methodist Attorney General searched Whitman's desk there, he found revisions for the third edition of Leaves of Grass, which contained what he thought were "smutty passages." He fired Whitman on the spot. Secretary Speed then offered Whitman a job in his own department, where the poet continued to draw a salary even after he had gone on sick-leave to his mother's house on Long Island, where he wrote perhaps the greatest eulogy in American English, "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloomed."

Tripp has demonstrated beyond a reasonable doubt that Lincoln had an important "lavender streak," as Carl Sandburg so appropriately called it. So what? People have come to grips with Thomas Jefferson's intimate friendship with his slave Sally Hemings. He largely wrote the "Declaration of Independence," while he loved his slave. Lincoln wrote the forever-memorable "Gettysburg Address," which marked the end of slavery, while he invited one of the Pennsylvania Bucks to sleep with him during his wife's shopping trips to New York City. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" defined one memorable goal of the Civil Rights movement, while he carried on an active heterosexual life beyond his marriage. They shot Lincoln, they shot Martin Luther King, but their dreams live on. Alexander the Great lamented that he had no Homer to remember his deeds; Abraham Lincoln has been more fortunate in having a perennial group of poets and scholars to celebrate his life. Among them, Tripp has now illuminated Lincoln's "lavender streak" more brilliantly and thoroughly than any previous Lincoln scholar.

The evidence is in the letters Alexander Hamilton wrote to John Laurens shortly after Laurens left Washington's military family to

return to his home state of South Carolina in an effort to persuade the legislature to recruit African American troops to fight the British. Laurens evidently wrote first but Hamilton's reply in April 1779 is the first letter in the correspondence that we have. Hamilton begins his letter with what certainly appear to be homoerotic intentions:

"Cold in my professions, warm in my friendships, I wish, my Dear Laurens, it might be in my power, by action rather than words to convince you that I love you. I shall only tell you that 'til you bade us Adieu, I hardly knew the value you had taught my heart to set upon you. Indeed, my friend, it was not well done. You know the opinion I entertain of mankind, and how much it is my desire to preserve myself free from particular attachments, and to keep my happiness independent of the caprice of others. You should not have taken advantage of my sensibility to steal into my affections without my consent. But as you have done it,and as we are generally indulgent to those we love, I shall not scruple to pardon the fraud you have committed, on condition that for my sake, if not for your own, you will always continue to merit the partiality, which you have artfully instilled into me."
It doesn't seem that Laurens' letters sparked this ardor. In the next paragraph Hamilton refers to his letters and its all business:

"I have received your two letters one from Philadelphia the other from Chester. I am pleased with your success, so far, and I hope the favorable omens, that precede your application to the Assembly may have as favourable an issue, provided the situation of affairs should require it which I fear will be the case."

Hamilton then turns to what must have been the major concern in Laurens' letters: his promotion to Lieutenant-Colonel which vaulted him above his fellow aide-de-camps. Hamilton writes:

"This carries with it an air of preference, which, though we can all truly say, we love your character and admire your military merit, cannot fail to give some of us uneasy sensations. But in this, my dear J I wish you to understand me well. The blame, if there is any, falls wholly upon Congress. I repeat it, your conduct has been perfectly right and even laudable; you rejected the offer when you ought to have rejected it; and you accepted it when you ought to have accepted it; and let me add with a degree of overscrupulous delicacy. It was necessary to your project; your project was the public good; and I should have done the same. In hesistating, you have refined upon the refinements of generosity."

After a little military gossip to the detriment of Gen Gates, "fresh proof of his impudence, his folly and his rascality," though Hamilton gives no specifics, Hamilton mentions a letter he has enclosed which is from Laurens' wife in England. When the war started Laurens was studying in England and in October 1776, at the young age of 21, he married an Englishwoman. He left her in January 1777. Hamilton writes:

"I anticipate by sympathy the pleasure you must feel from the sweet converse of your dearer self in the inclosed letters. I hope they may be recent. They were brought out of New York by General Thompson delivered to him there by a Mrs. Moore not long from England, soi-disante parente de Madame votre epouse. She speaks of a daughter of yours, well when she left England, perhaps (---)"
Then Hamilton launches into a rather bold sally about the type of wife he wants Laurens to find for him in South Carolina. Most important is her fortune:

"But as to fortune, the larger stock of that the better. You know my temper and circumstances and will therefore pay special attention to this article in the treaty. Though I run no risk of going to Purgatory for my avarice; yet as money is an essential ingredient to happiness in this world - as I have not much of my own and as I am very little calculated to get more either by my address or industry; it must needs be, that my wife, if I get one, bring at least a sufficiency to administer to her own extravagancies. NB You will be pleased to recollect in your negotiations that I have no invincible antipathy to the maidenly beauties & that I am willing to take the trouble of them upon myself."
Then Hamilton roguishly tells Laurens what to tell the maidens about their suitor:

"To excite their emulation, it will be necessary for you to give an account of the lover - his size, make, quality of mind and body, achievements, expectations, fortune, & c. In drawing my picture, you will no doubt be civil to your friend; mind you do justice to the length of my nose and don't forget, that I (-----)"
Then he suggests that all he has written is in jest:

"Do I want a wife? No - I have plagues enough without desiring to add to the number that greatest of all; and if I were silly enough to do it, I should take care how I employ a proxy. Did I mean to show my wit? If I did, I am sure I have missed my aim. Did I only intend to frisk? In this I have succeeded, but I have done more. I have gratified my feelings, by lengthening out the only kind of intercourse now in my power with my friend. Adieu."
I have never seen the originals of this letter. The editor of them uses (---) dashes to indicate illigible words, each dash roughly a word.

This indeed is pretty good evidence of a physically affectionate relationship between Hamilton and Laurens, or, at least, Hamilton's desire for one. Hamilton's emphasizing the words "size" and "body," leads one to believe that Laurens was well acquainted with the latter and the size of Hamilton's penis. However, a case can be made that this was all puckish writing, with Hamilton taking advantage of Laurens guilty feelings for abandoning his wife; and Hamilton responding to Laurens' jibes at Hamilton's search for a wife. And he did marry a year and a half later.

That Hamilton did not sustain this banter in subsequent letters doesn't negate the importance of this letter. It would be a difficult act to follow so it is probable that Laurens did not respond in kind and that Hamilton became more circumspect. His next letter to Laurens written in May is mostly about military affairs and Laurens' absence is regretted not by Hamilton personally but by the "family," the group of aides-de-camp that Laurens left:

"Harrison, McHenry, Gibbs put you in mind of the place you have in their hearts. McHenry would write you; but besides public business he pleads his being engaged in writing an heroic Poem of which the family are the subject. You will have your part in it. He celebrates our usual matin entertainment, and the music of those fine sounds, with which he and I are accustomed to regale the ears of the fraternity. Harrison holds a distinguished place in the piece. His sedentary exploits are sung in strains of laborious dulness. The many breeches he has worn out during the war are enumerated, nor are the depredations which long sitting has made on his ______ unsung."
In his next letter to Laurens, dated September 11, Hamilton chides him for not writing:

"I acknowledge but one letter from you, since you left us, of the 14th of July which just arrived in time to appease a violent conflict between my friendship and my pride. I have written you five or six letters since you left Philadelphia and I should have written you more had you made proper return. But like a jealous lover, when I thought you slighted my caresses, my affection was alarmed and my vanity piqued. I had almost resolved to lavish no more of them upon you and to reject you as an inconstant and an ungrateful ______. But you have now diarmed my resentment and by a single mark of attention made up the quarrel. You must at least alow me a large stock of good nature."
The rest of the long letter is devoted to military and civil matters, with one misogynistic aside. Hamilton had been maligned by a Dr. Gordon who Hamilton describes as "an old Jesuit," and adds: "The proverb is verified - 'there never was any mischief but had a priest or a woman at the bottom.'" Laurens came to Philadelphia in the fall of 1779 and suggested to Congress (his father was president of that body,) that Hamilton be sent to France as secretary to the diplomatic mission being sent there. In a January 8, 1780, letter Hamilton reveals his desire to leave Washington's family and get a field command. The request had been denied and Hamilton confessed:

"I am chagrined and unhappy but I submit. In short Laurens I am disgusted with every thing in this world but yourself and very few more honest fellows and I have no other wish than as soon as possible to make a brilliant exit. 'Tis a weakness; but I feel I am not fit for this terrestreal Country."
Meanwhile, Hamilton took advantage of winter quarters to begin courting young ladies, soon centering his attentions on Elizabeth Schuyler, daughter of General Schuyler of New York. His March 30 letter to Laurens is mostly business with a short affectionate closing:

"Adieu my Dear; I am sure you will exert yourself to save your country; but do not unnecessarily risk one of its most valuable sons. Take as much care of yourself as you ought for the public sake and for the sake of Yr. affectionate A Hamilton. All the lads remember you as a friend and a brother. Meade says God bless you."
Hamilton mentions his engagement in a June 30 letter to Laurens, after giving a full report on the war news. He strikes a pose to prove that he's not anywhere near being head-over-heels in love:

"Have you not heard that I am on the point of becoming a benedict? I confess my sins. I am guilty. Next fall completes my doom. I give up my liberty to Miss Schuyler. She is a good hearted girl who I am sure will never play the termagant; though not a genius she has good sense enough to be agreeable, and though not a beauty, she has fine black eyes - is rather handsome and has every other requisite of the exterior to make a lover happy. And believe me, I am lover in earnest, though I do not speak of the perfections of my Mistress in the enthusiasm of Chivalry."

"Is it true that you are confined to Pennsylvania? Cannot you pay us a visit? If you can, hasten to give us a pleasure which we shall relish with the sensibility of the sincerest friendship."
Laurens had been captured, then paroled with restrictions on his movements. Apparently Laurens could only go so far as the Pennsylvania border, so Hamilton, as revealed in a letter to his fiancee, pressed for permission to go to the border to meet him and "the General has half consented to its taking place." In his next letter, September 12, Hamilton refers to "mutual neglect in our correspondence." Laurens complained about not getting letters from the rest of the "family." Hamilton explained: "I have conveyed your reproof to the lads. They have considered me as the secretary of the family and fancied a partnership which did not exist. Writing or not writing to you, you know they love you and sympathise in all that concerns you."

The phrase "fancied a partnership which did not exist" suggests two things: that others in the family perceived Hamilton and Laurens to be so close that their friendship was exclusive, and that Hamilton realized that that wasn't the case. This suggests that much of homoeroticism in Hamilton's letter was an imposition. Hamilton was the bastard without family connections from the West Indies and Laurens was the scion of the prominent South Carolina family. In intellect, imagination, vaulting ambition, and lust for derring-do, the two were equal. Is it possible that Hamilton sought to trump Laurens' advantaged upbringing by highlighting the physical attraction they had for each other which if consummated would have invited scandal? This tension is even more apparent in Hamilton's next letter, written four days later on the eve of an important meeting with French officers. After explaining the importance of the meeting, Hamilton chides Laurens for using as an excuse for not writing that his parole forbade writing about military affairs:

"That you can speak only of your private affairs shall be no excuse for your not writing frequently. Remember that you write to your friends, and that friends have the same interests, pains, pleasures, sympathies; and that all men love egotism."
This passage speaks volumes about the lack of genuine intimacy between Hamilton and Laurens, with the distance being maintained by the latter. In the next paragraph Hamilton is his provocative self:

"In spite of Schuylers black eyes, I have still a part for the public and another for you; so your impatience to have me married is misplaced; a strange cure by the way, as if after matrimony I was to be less devoted than I am now. Let me tell you, that I intend to restore the empire of Hymen and that Cupid is to be his prime Minister. I wish you were at liberty to transgress the bounds of Pensylvania. I would invite you after the fall to Albany to be witness to the final consummation. My Mistress is a good girl, and already loves you because I have told her you are a clever fellow and my friend; but mind, she loves you a l'americaine not a la francoise."

"Adieu, be happy, and let friendship between us be more than a name. A Hamilton The General & all the lads send you their love."
In the extant letters, this is the last of Hamilton's homoerotic bravado with Laurens. But it is quite enough to allow us to label Hamilton as a man with a wide appetite for pleasures that comfortably included homosexuality. Marriage would be no cure for his love for Laurens. He wished Laurens was able to "transgress"... the state line. Of course, an invitation to the "final consummation" may not be that novel an inclusion in a young, about-to-be-married man's letter to a bosom friend, nor his coy remarks about his wife-to-be.

In what proved to be his last letter to Laurens, Hamilton did not stroke any erotic chords. He suggests that peace is at hand and tells Laurens:

"It requires all the virtue and all the abilities of the Country. Quit your sword my friend, put on the toga, come to Congress. We know each other sentiments, our views are the same; we have fought side by side to make America free, let us hand in hand struggle to make her happy."
This is a speech, not a letter to a lover.

The Hamilton-Laurens relationship was short-lived because Laurens, lusting for action even as the war was essentially over, got himself killed in a meaningless skirmish in 1782. I don't think we can read into Laurens' foolhardiness any death-wish arising from Hamilton's marriage. And in a letter to General Greene, Hamilton speaks of Laurens' death with pat phrases: "I feel the deepest affiction at the news we have just received of the loss of our dear and inestimable friend Laurens. His career of virtue is at an end.... I feel the loss of a friend I truly and most tenderly loved, and one of a very small number." On the otherhand, marriage did not cure Hamilton of his homoerotic yearnings. His encounters with the condemned spy Andre were extraordinary and the way he engineered his leaving George Washington's military family had sexual overtones.
The case began with a charge against an Ensign for slander against another soldier. At Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, in February 1778 Ensign Anthony Maxwell was brought before a court-martial charged with "propogating a scandalous report prejudicial to the character of Lieutt. Enslin." The Ensign was ultimately acquitted of the charge. In March 1778 Lieut. Enslin was brought to trial before a court-martial. According to General Washington's report: "...Lieutt. Enslin of Colo. Malcolm's Regiment tried for attempting to commit Sodomy ..." Washington's secretary continues to describe the results of the trial in negative, descriptive terms: "His Excellency the Commander in Chief approves the sentence and with Abhorrence & Detestation of such Infamous Crimes orders Lieutt. Enslin to be be drummed out of Camp tomorrow morning...." It seems that Ensign Maxwell had witnessed Lieut. Enslin in bed with another soldier. There is no record of the sentence ever being carried out, nor what happened to the dismissed Lieutenant.
Since there is a dearth of original 17th century Dutch construction left on the Island, this house is worth saving. It is in a terrible state, as it has a hole in the roof and weeds have covered the structure.

Please send letters to Boro President Molinaro, Councilman Ignizio, State Senator Lanza, The Department of Parks and Recreation, The Historic Houses Trust of NYC, and The Landmarks Preservation Commission of NYC, and let them know we are serious about wanting the entire site preserved and free from any construction!
Residents went berserk when they found out the NPS was reorienting the house because of the limitations of the new location in St. Nicholas Park. What they don't realize is that so many of our Nation's historic, architectural treasures have been moved from their original sites and reoriented in order to prevent demolition!
People who post don't understand Colonial and Federal architecture (just look at all of the incorrect and hideous knockoffs we see polluting our landscape!) or understand the original design of the Piazzas, the moving of the front entry, and the destruction of the original Piazzas when the structure was moved in 1889. And this info is so easily available to find on the Internet. I wish people were more informed about the subject matter they are posting about before they publish their posts! It is nothing short of a travesty that there is so little knowledge of one of our greatest Founding Fathers! Just look at Monticello and all that has been done for Jefferson's home! I am sure the NPS will create a shrine for Alex!Nickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09902084738009909024noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5040084526611328450.post-70252130994578687502009-02-10T13:01:00.001-05:002009-02-10T13:01:11.102-05:00Alexander Hamilton's The Grange

Alexander Hamilton's The Grange
Originally uploaded by NickMat

Nickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09902084738009909024noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5040084526611328450.post-78912905273000245342009-02-09T11:21:00.001-05:002009-02-09T11:22:41.400-05:00Manhattan in 1836Nickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09902084738009909024noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5040084526611328450.post-34903069364387960292009-02-02T12:36:00.003-05:002009-02-02T12:41:07.722-05:00Original 31 Acre Hamilton Grange Estate<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 141px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1ZBzplStUqs/SYcvkI05yLI/AAAAAAAABdU/-ks68IyjCUI/s320/Grange+Estate.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5298255784515848370" />Nickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09902084738009909024noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5040084526611328450.post-90466683791919141502008-10-09T11:39:00.004-04:002008-10-09T12:13:08.413-04:00Hamilton Grange Restoration revealing Architectural Secrets
The NPS is finding many fascinating architectural features that have been hidden from view for the past 200 years! Although there was much prejudice against catholics, particularly in New England, Philadelphians welcomed many courageous Italian citizens to the city and the colony of Pennsylvania. The following is a list of the major personalities who participated in America's great experiment from the very beginning:
Italian officers in the American Revolution include:

William Paca (October 31, 1740–October 13, 1799), was a signatory to the United StatesDeclaration of Independence as a representative of Maryland. A successful fur trader on the western frontier (today the mid-western states of Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio), Vigo served as a colonel, spy, and financier during the American Revolution. Thanks to the efforts of the National Park Service, Hamilton's Federal Style Mansion will be renovated and restored to accurately reflect Hamilton's interpretation of the prevailing style of architecture in the new nation in 1800. John McCombe, Jr. integrated many of Hamilton's design ideas for The Grange. The architecture draws on Classical Roman architecture of the Roman Republic, which in turn was inspired by Classical Greek architecture.

A shallow hipped roof, which is hidden behind a classic ballestrade encircles the top floor at the roofline. Dental moulding forms the cornice under the eaves on all four sides of the house. Symetry was very inportant, so the house resemples an almost square shape with window bays equally spaced on all sides. The octagonal rooms at the central access of the house was considered state of the art, regardless of the unusual shape of the two parlors on the main floor was inspired by unusually shaped rooms from Classical Rome.

The main entrance will be restored to its original appearance with slender Tuscan columns supporting a porch over the doorway. The doorway will have a leaded glass transom above and leaded glass sidelights on either side.
Hamilton insisted on state-of-the art Rumford fireplaces, which were smokeless and heated the rooms more efficiently.Nickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09902084738009909024noreply@blogger.com1
